A demon killed the entire family of Kamado Tanjirou when he wasn't home. The only survivor is his younger sister, Nezuko, who has mutated into a ferocious demon. At one point, Tanjirou gets attacked by Nezuko, but he was saved by a swordsman Tomioka Giyu of the "Demon Slayer Corps" (*demons killing association).
