The manga "Boys Over Flowers" has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the "most published copies of a Shojo manga series written by a single author." The original author, Kamio Yoko, commented on the certification on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the series' birth.
"Boys Over Flowers" is a girls' manga by Kamio Yoko that was serialized in "Margaret" from 1992 to 2004. The story follows Makino Tsukushi, a girl from a middle-class family, as she leads her school life at the Eitoku Academy, attended by children from wealthy families, and meets Domyoji Tsukasa, the leader of the F4.
The total number of comics sold in Japan has exceeded 61 million copies, including electronic copies, and the series has produced a variety of media including TV anime, movies, TV dramas, and stage performances. The 30th anniversary of its birth is being celebrated, and the first exhibition, "Boys Over Flowers 30th Anniversary -Jewelry BOX-," is currently being held from April 19, 2023.
In April 2023, this work was recognized by Guinness World Records as "The most published copies of a Shojo manga series written by a single author." The certificate was awarded for 59,409,000 copies (as of April 19, 2023), which is the number of copies of paper comics alone.
In conjunction with the certification, Kamio, the author of the original manga, commented, "I am very happy that Boys Over Flowers has been recognized as a Guinness World Record in this milestone year of the 30th anniversary. I believe this record is made possible by the support of so many readers. Thank you very much."
The "Boys Over Flowers" series has attracted even more attention since it was recognized as a Guinness World Record. The first exhibition commemorating the 30th anniversary of "Boys Over Flowers" will be held at Matsuya Ginza until May 8.
The results of "Sanrio Character Awards 2020" have been revealed on Jun. 9, 2020. A record-breaking 14,550,000 votes were received, and 1st place goes to Cinnamoroll. This is the 3rd time he took 1st place, and it has been 2 years since the last time. "Sanrio Character Awards 2020" was held under the theme of "My heart goes to him/her". The voting started from Apr. 10, with fans all over the world voting for their favorite character along with messages of their feelings towards them, such as "I love you!", "I remember having goods of you when I was in elementary school!" or "I'm looking forward to seeing you again." Though not being able to receive votes at shops and events at Sanrio Shops due to the spread of COVID-19, a record-breaking 14,556,939 votes were received mainly via online voting. 1st place was taken by Cinnamoroll (2nd place last year) with 1,387,152 votes. He kept his position from the midterm report and took 1st place for the 3rd time. It has been 2 years since he last took 1st place, and "Fure Fure Ganbare!" sung by Cinamoroll has been decided to be released for streaming. Coming in 2nd was Pompompurin (3rd place last year) with 1,288,245 votes, and 3rd place went to Pochacco (5th place last year) with 1,013,927 votes, reaching the top 3 for the first time in 24 years. For the special "Tanita Award", which is given to the character who had most pre-orders received for the "Sanrio Character Pedometer" released from Tanita, went to Yoshikitty. The international anime film festival "Tokyo Anime Awards Festival 2023 (TAAF2023)" will be held in Ikebukuro, Tokyo from March 10 to March 13, 2023. To commemorate the awarding of the festival's "Animation of the Year" category, a selection of the anime "SPY x FAMILY" will be screened at the festival. A special program to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Canadian animation artist Frédéric Back has also been announced, as well as a talk show featuring the directors and staff of the films screened at "TAAF2023". The "Tokyo Animation Awards Festival" (TAAF), the 10th time of which will be held in 2023, is an international anime film festival that is an independent development of the Tokyo Anime Awards, which had been held as part of the Tokyo International Anime Fair since 2002. TAAF aims to discover and nurture new talent, to contribute to the promotion of anime culture and industry, and to convey the attractions of Tokyo and contribute to the promotion of tourism in Tokyo. Under the slogan of "Tokyo becoming the hub of anime," the festival will screen works of high quality and originality from around the world in Tokyo. The festival aims to promote exchanges with anime lovers around the world, to provide creators and audiences with stimulation and inspiration, and to transmit a new wave of animation from Tokyo to the rest of the world based on such excitement and stimulation. The anime "SPY x FAMILY," which has been selected for screening, is a spy comedy based on the manga series by Endo Tatsuya, serialized in Shueisha's "Shonen Jump +."
