I was attracted to housing complexes. The clear shape of the buildings. The spacious and lush grounds. The way they used to be a symbol of this country's rise from the ashes, and the way they have been neglected and destroyed. And yet, they continue to live on in an updated guise. It is also for the new generations who desire, live, and rest in this place.
The original landscape of the post-war Japanese people, still working hard to support others behind the scenes. How admirable.
A girl in this film considers the housing complex to be an irreplaceable place. But the people around her don't understand. They call it a rundown housing complex or a ghost housing complex or whatever they want to call it. They even start to demolish it. It doesn't matter what she thinks.
I'm sure that everyone has an important place in their life, but it's often a stranger to others. But that's why they must have had their own special experiences there. It's difficult to share such personal experiences with others, but when you see the passion that comes out of them, you wonder if you can't at least believe in them...
As a result of my belief in this film, it became a work that I felt so much for housing complexes that I gave it a title. This is probably a bit of an oddball for this kind of animated film. It's a challenge for me as well. Some people suggested that I make it into an easy-to-understand school setting. I’ve suffered and worried, but I chose what I believe! On the contrary, we're all in this together, gathering our wisdom! On the contrary, we all worked together and gathered our wisdom!, which made the housing complexes sail.
With the help of many people, I have been able to make such a "small" personal idea into a big project. I feel sorry for this, but at the same time I am grateful for it, and I am working on it with a sober mind...Now that I’ve involved everyone, I want to make it good! I want to do my best.
In the year 2022, what will the boy and the girl see at the end of the drifting of this housing complex? Please look forward to it.
Character Design: Nagae Akihiro
Based on director Ishida's outlandish ideas, this film is perfect for summer. As you can see in the title, I paid particular attention to the design of the housing complex, and I hope you can feel the charm of the expression of this architecture.
And most importantly, I hope you will be able to feel the thoughts of the characters associated with the place. Please take a look.
Assistant Character Design: Kato Fumi
While inheriting the good qualities of the previous Colorido works, we are now working diligently to create a new horizon. I would like you to pay attention to how the children, who attend the same school but are of completely different types, will grow up through their drifting life.
I hope that those who are turning 12 now and those who used to be 12 will enjoy this story of a summer that could have been!
■ [Story]
Kosuke and Natsume are childhood friends.
They are now in the sixth grade in elementary school, but have been avoiding each other lately, and things seem to be getting awkward.
One day during the summer vacation, they are in a housing complex that is about to be demolished.
The housing complex is a place where they grew up and have fond memories of each other.
While Kousuke and Natsume are playing in the complex, they are suddenly caught up in a strange phenomenon.
They find themselves in an ocean as far as they can see.
With Kousuke and Natsume on board, the housing complex drifts through the mysterious sea.
Will they be able to return to their original world?
A summer farewell journey begins.
