‘Sanrio Character Ranking 2023’ announced the results for the first day of voting. Cinnamoroll, aiming for its fourth consecutive win, has taken the top spot.
‘Sanrio Character Ranking’ is an annual event that began in 1986 on Sanrio’s annual magazine ‘Ichigo Shimbun (The Strawberry News)’ and is now in its 38th year. Over 450 Sanrio characters are evaluated based on the number of votes they receive from both the internet and Sanrio stores.
This year, the event features a new category named the ‘2023 Sanrio Character Ranking: Partner Category’, which includes 26 Sanrio characters partnered with corporationsand local governments.
On April 11, the first day of voting, web votes were cast between 11:00 and 23:59. The three major Sanrio “dog characters” dominated the top three places, with “Cinnamoroll” in the 1st place (last year: 1st place), “Pom Pom Pudding”in the 2nd place (last year: 2nd place), and “Pochakko” (last year: 4th place) in the 3rd place.
Following the top 3 are “Kuromi” (last year: 3rd place), who made the top three for the first time last year, and “JOCHUM” (first entry), developed by the global boy group JO1 and Sanrio, in 5th place. “JOCHUM” outstripped top-ranking regulars including “Hello Kitty” (last year: 6th place), “My Melody” (last year: 5th place).
The voting period is from April 11 to May 26, and the final results will be announced on June 11.
