“One Piece Film: Red,” the latest theatrical version of the “One Piece” series, has grossed 19.7 billion yen with more than 14.27 million viewers in its first 177 days of release. The worldwide box-office revenue reached 31.9 billion yen.
“One Piece” is a maritime adventure based on the boys’ manga by Oda Eiichiro, which has been serialized in “Weekly Shonen Jump” since July 1997. It is a popular work that has spawned numerous cross-media works and merchandise, with events being held without interruption.
In 2021, the work reached 1,000 episodes in the anime and 100 volumes for the manga, with July 22, 2022, marking the 25th anniversary of the series. The latest film, “One Piece Film: Red,” released on August 6, 2022, depicts a story that begins with the shocking revelation that the world’s most beloved singer, Uta, is Shanks’ daughter.
Opening on August 6 with a rocket start, the film drew 1.57 million viewers and grossed over 2.25 billion yen in the first two days. The film continued to break records without slowing down, and on August 25, the 20th day of its release, it surpassed the 10 billion yen mark at the box office.
The film ended its run on January 29, 2023, with box-office revenue of 19.7 billion yen and an attendance of 14.27 million viewers in its 177 days of operation. This record ranks 8th on the all-time domestic film box-office revenue list.
The overseas box office totaled 12.2 billion yen (as of January 27, at 129.48 yen to the dollar), bringing the worldwide box office total to 31.9 billion yen.
To commemorate this milestone, Oda Eiichiro, the author of the original manga, released a visual celebrating the 31.9 billion yen mark at the worldwide box office, with Luffy covering his eyes with his hands and a big smile on his face.
Having run for six months, the film held a grand finale party on January 28, the day before the end of its run. To express their gratitude, the Straw Hat crew including Tanaka Mayumi and Nazuka Kaori, who plays Uta, gathered for the event.
On January 29, the last day of the movie, many fans went to the movie theaters. Some expressed their gratitude and sadness to the end of the movie on social media, “Thank you for such a wonderful six months! It was the best movie ever! I hope it will be premiered again someday,” and “This is the first time I’ve been to the theater 18 times to see the same movie. It makes me sad that I can no longer see it in theaters…”
