“Sword Art Online the Movie: -Progressive- Scherzo of a Dark Dusk” has announced postponing its release, which was scheduled on September 10, 2022, due to production delays caused by the nationwide spread of coronavirus.
“Sword Art Online”, commonly called SAO, is based on the novel series of the same title by Kawahara Reki, which won the Grand Prize of the “15th Dengeki Novel Award” and has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide.
Set in the next-generation VRMMORPG “Sword Art Online,” the story follows the adventures of the main character Kirito and the heroine Asuna.
Since the first volume of the original novel was released in April 2009, the series has developed a wide range of media mixes. The TV anime has been broadcast for four series since 2012, and “Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale” was released in 2017.
“Sword Art Online the Movie: -Progressive- Scherzo of a Dark Dusk” is the second film of the reboot series of SAO, which depicts the trajectory from “1st Floor Aincrad,” the beginning of the whole story, in-depth and in detail. This film is the sequel of “Sword Art Online the Movie: -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night” released on October 30, 2021.

The statement explains that it is “due to production delays caused by the nationwide spread of coronavirus,” and continues, “We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to those looking forward to the release. We have been working hard, but we deeply apologize for this announcement.”
They also announced to cancel the completion announcement screening scheduled to be held on August 24. Tickets will be refunded. The advanced tickets and Movie Ticket Cards that have already been purchased could be used when the film opens.
