However, this manga called “With a Fogie Reincarnated as a Pretty Fantasy Girl”, already has enthusiastic fans, and in May 2021 the anime adaptation has been announced!
This work is an original manga serialized in the manga app “Cycomics” operated by that “Cygames”, which has been producing hit titles such as “Uma Musume Pretty Derby”. It is an exceptional title the anime adaption of which has been announced only a year and a half starting from the publishing.
This time, we are planning a series of interviews with the two original authors of “With a Fogie Reincarnated as a Pretty Fantasy Girl” and the editor in charge, divided into three parts!
And in this article, we asked Gota Shingo of Cygames, the talented editor of “With a Fogie Reincarnated as a Pretty Fantasy Girl”, about the story from the original draft of this work to the anime adaptation announcement.
Unusual “manga, the anime adaptation of which has been discussed from volume 1” It is super popular among adults…?
――How you came so fast to “The anime adaptation has been announced after a year and a half after the serialization started”?
Gota: That’s right… About a year or so after the serialization, the anime adaptation was discussed.
Even the anime adaptation has been announced, at that time only 1 or 2 volumes have been published, so there was not enough material. Usually, the anime being released after 4 volumes, so I wasn’t really sure (laugh)
Even so, after the talk and first meeting, I received a fairly specific proposal and thought, “This is serious.”
It was sort of “We want to make the anime this badly!”
――What was the deciding factor for announcing the anime after a year and a half?
Koda: it was a butchering, but a certain company played a central role in pushing forward.
Normally, many companies participate in anime adaptations and it requires time to adjust everything, but because this company decided to make the anime, we were able to realize the speed of “the anime adaptation after a year and a half”.
If it would be this way, I think it was more than a year and a half to announce the animation.
―― Oh, I see! Why did the company decide to move forward when it wasn’t enough of the original manga to be animated?
Koda: Of course, I don’t know the details and you need to ask a person who is in charge of anime about this, but I heard that this work is also popular overseas.
The topic “The anime adaptation by all means” was raised because of its popularity.
There were failed anime projects before… “If we put effort we will make an interesting project!” The three-legged race with original authors to create the animation strategy for “With a Fogie Reincarnated as a Pretty Fantasy Girl” started from the early announcement, but in fact, the anime adaptation was the goal from the start. I heard that two original authors and the editor have been preparing for it.
――I would like to ask you what you have prepared for the anime, but first of all, could you briefly tell us what is your work “editing” is about?
Koda: Basically, editing is “getting the manuscript and putting it on the medium.”
There are different ways for each editor to do this, but I often suggest to the authors and think about directions together in order to deliver more interesting works to the readers.
Regarding this work, I have had a long relationship with the two original authors, so we together worked on the direction of the story in serialization.
――From when have you been working with the two original authors?
Ada: I was editor-in-charge of Tsurusaki-san and Ikezawa-san’s previous project. Originally I was in charge of comicalizing anime titles at a major publishing company, but I got involved with them draw the manga.
Then, when I changed jobs and became a Cy Comics editor, I talked about whether I would like to join them again, and this happened.
――Then, please tell us how you decided to aim for the anime adaptation of the original manga “With a Fogie Reincarnated as a Pretty Fantasy Girl”.
Koda: Actually, a spin-off manga (gaiden) that those two draw before was supposed to received an anime adaptation.
We’d been waiting for the follow-up report, but it was very frustrating that the story never proceeded and the story of animation ended up being blank.
That’s why this time, with the original manga that they made, I was enthusiastic about making it into an animation. In fact, the name of episode 1 was revised many times until it was done.
When we were thinking about the project, there was an idea to make it as a one-episode work at first, after all, there was a possibility that it would be easier to make the anime if it was made into a story, so I went in that direction.
Because it is so special, I was afraid there would be problems, but it’s become very popular?!
――The title of this work is amazing, but the settings are quite special. Did you have any difficulty in going through the project?
Koda: That’s what I tried to manage working on the name of chapter 1, but because the concept of an old man turning into a beautiful girl and making a romantic comedy with this old man’s best friend, which is a “too special setting”, so the reputation among surroundings was not very high.
In fact, “Cy Comics” was a fairly latecomer among the manga apps that deal with reincarnation in another world, so I think that was also the point.
But that’s why I felt like “Look under the cover!” (Laughs)
――How was the reaction after the release of the first episode?
Koda: Contrary to all worries, it becomes quite popular at the time of the first chapter. A lot of hot comments came!
Then I realized that can pull through the anime adaptation.
“Congratulations on stacking up!” There were unexpected fans voices after the anime adaptation has been announced?
――How fans reacted when the anime adaptation has been announced?
Koda: First of all, I was surprised to see it in trends even though it was only announced in “Cy Comics”. It made me happy that so many people would support us.
It was also impressive that there were many voices from usual “Congratulations on anime adaptation” to unusual “Congratulations on stacking up!” (laughs).
――What does “Congratulations on stacking up!” mean?
Ada: There are some fans who stand out in the comment section of “With a Fogie Reincarnated as a Pretty Fantasy Girl”. He commented every time with a characteristic long sentence, “I want to see the band of crazy anime decision, so I’ll pile up coins”, and it seemed to be recognized by other fans.
Since he always supported us like that, other fans have come to call him “Stucking up” from the place of “Big brother who piles up coins every time when he says he wants to see an anime”.
There are many people who support us in the same way as “Pile up Niki”, and from an editorial standpoint, I would like to avoid mentioning specific fans, but it was still noticeable.
――And on the cover of manga’s 4th volume released after the announcement of the animation, there was a proper “Crazy anime announcement”.
Ada: That’s right. This is a form that originally used the catchphrase of chapter 1, but I also thought that it could be taken by the viewer.
For those who have manga anime adaptations of which they want to see, what they can do to reach it
――Was it the support of such passionate fansthat lead to the anime?
Koda: In terms of direct factors, it is because of the support of the overseas fans I mentioned at the beginning. However, of course, in order to be supported overseas, I think it happened thanks to passionate fans in Japan. There was no choice but to ask the producer who brought in the anime project for details (laughs).
――If fans’ enthusiastic support is what makes the anime adaptations, I think it is fans’ dream, but what do you need to do as a fan to turn your favorite manga into anime?
Ada: the passionate propaganda?
I think that the more people who support the work, the easier it will be to get an anime adaptation. You should also refer to reviews on Amazon, and other sources, the number of stars in the rating, etc.
As a result, I think that featuring in various manga awards, etc., will catch the eyes of anime producers.
