August 2 is “Snack Day”.

It was determined by Japan Oyatsu Association, due to the sound of “Oya (8) tsu (2) (meaning snack in Japanese).

There are many sweets lovers in anime ang games. Some eat up all sweets in sweets buffet, drink a cup of coffee with a lot of sugar, or loves a parfait in spite of having a scary appearance.

Here at Anime!Anime!, we conducted a readers survey titled, “Speaking of a character that loves sweets, who comes to your mind?”. The survey was conducted from July 17 to 24 and received responses from 614 people. The females readers made up the majority with approximately 90% of overall vote, while male readers only made up 10%. For the age group, the young readers made up the majority, for minors making up about 55% and 20’s making up approximately 30%.

■Gin-san from “Gintama” dominated the ranking!

1st Place
The 1st place was Sakata Gintoki from “Gintama”. The support rating was approximately 60% and ranked on the top for 2 years in a row.

He seems to own so many episodes eating sweet food, including “Uji Gintoki bowl with sweet red bean paste on rice was shocking”, “his diet is regulated by his doctor because his blood glucose level is too high”, and “he is the protagonist with strawberry underwear because he loves strawberry parfait and strawberry milk!”.
“He first appeared by knocking down a person who spilled his chocolate parfait. He is a sweets lover, who hangs a frame with ‘sugar’ written on it at his workplace” and “He loves sweet food so much and his birthday is October 10, which stands for 10 (tou, meaning sugar in Japanese).” He dominated more than majority of overall votes with comments even mentioning his birthdays and the first scene.

2nd Place
The 2nd place was Gojou Satoru from “Jujutsu Kaisen”. The support rating was approximately 5%.

A popular character from the title experienced anime adaption in fall 2020 ranked in this ranking. He is also a sweet food lover with the comments, “He is impressive, when he is eating a lot of sweet food that possibly can make you sick with too much sugar” and “There is the strong connection with sweets=Gojou Satoru as he purchases Japanese sweet food at Kikusuian as the souvenir, and he is often depicted with sweets in illustrations”. He also charmed the fans by unexpectedly “being the sweets lover, although his appearance seems to love a black coffee more”.

3rd Place
The 3rd place was Edogawa Ranpo from “Bungo Stray Dogs”. The support rating was approximately 4% and ranked the same as the previous year.

The gap between when solving mystery and eating sweet food, and comments mentioned that said, “He loves small snacks, and he only eats sweet red beans from a zenzai (a bowl of rice cake and sweet red beans)” and “I believe he is a big fan of sweet food because he even eats snacks during the war with opposing organization”. He is likely to require sugar for him to use his special ability, “Super Mystery Solver”.

■Introducing other comments!

Saiki Kusuo from “Disastrous Life of Saiki K.”: “He is always calm and emotionless, but he shows a cute face when eating sweets or a coffee jerry.”
Saeki Mahoro from “Fugo Detective Balance: UNLIMITED”: “Saeki-san eats sweets even during work. He gives out gummy fish to his colleagues. Together with his lovely behaviors, I often forget that he is a police officer.”
Yotsuba Tamaki from “Idolish Seven”: “He loves King Pudding the most. He loves sweets so much that he even brings sweets into school.”
Elmar from “Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid”: “He is a dragon girl from another world and big eater. It’s cute to see her eating sweet food.” The title, the sequel of which started in the summer of 2021, also won some votes.

While popular characters were ranked high in the ranking 2021 ver., new characters also ranked in, including Gojou Satoru from “Jujutsu Kaisen”. There are many smart characters in the ranking probably because they consume a lot of sugar to make their brains active.
