The latest work of the series, “Psycho-Pass 3: First Inspector” is set to go on sale as a Blu-ray & DVD in Jul. 15, 2020. In the meantime, the first part of a “3-week official interview”, where director Shiotani Naoyoshi talks about many topics such as the origin of the project, the two main characters featuring the film, the sound work, and the dubbing session, has arrived.
<Full comments are below>
Director Shiotani Naoyoshi
— PSYCHO-PASS 3 FIRST INSPECTOR (PP3FI) marks the conclusion of “PSYCHO-PASS 3 (PP3). The 3rd season of “PSYCHO-PASS” revolves around the two rookie inspectors, Shindo Arata and Kei Mikhail Ignatov. Please tell us where the idea of completely changing the main characters came from, along with the origins of this project.
Shiotani Naoyoshi (Shiotani): Around the time we were releasing “PSYCHO-PASS The Movie” (released in 2015), I had a conversation with the producers about what we should do next. “Isn't it time for the “PSYCHO-PASS” series to take a leap forward? The new series doesn't have to be centered on some officer from the Public Safety Bureau, it could tell the story of young rookie inspectors”, this kind of thoughts came up. I was confused at first, but then I realized it was the perfect timing to think about the new work by following that idea, so I decided to introduce a new protagonist for the 3rd season. By doing so, I thought that also the timeline should be different from the 1st and 2nd seasons. In addition, I proposed to the producers that I would like to create the trilogy “Psycho-Pass: Sinners of the System” (PPSS), which stands between the previous film and the next (3rd) season.
–That's the reason why the trilogy “PPSS” was made before “PP3”.
Shiotani: “PPSS” was also a test case for “PP3” in terms of production. For “PP3”, I tried to portray the human drama thoroughly with an hour-long episode each, to make it like a live-action overseas drama. “PPSS” was about 60 minutes each episode, but it was a hard challenge to make it instead of the usual 30 minute-episode of the TV anime series. We had to put a lot of stuff together in terms of story composition and development, and also the workload on the production floor was very heavy. We spent quite a bit of time on “PPSS”, but despite the difficulties we had, it worth doing all the work since we moved forward on two sides at the same time by also using its production as a test case for “PP3”.
–How did you want to portray Shindo Arata and Kei Mikhail Ignatov?
Shiotani: I wanted to make them an eccentric duo in many ways. I wanted Arata to look like a powerless man with poor fighting skills. He's is the shortest character in the “PP” series with 168 cm tall versus Kei who is 182 cm. The idea was also to create them as two contrastive figures, both externally and internally. Arata is very careless about his clothes since he always wears the same t-shirt in the garage where he sleeps. His hair is also ruffled, whether it's a natural perm or a sleeping habit, and he has the ability to focus on something while being blind to everything else. On the other hand, Kei comes from a different country where he was born, and for that, he's treated unfairly by the racists. He seems to be very calm, but in reality, he's the type of person who doesn't express his true feelings. Arata and Kei are connected by a past incident, and in “PP3” they support each other despite their differences.
–What about the sound work in “PP3”?
Shiotani: The staff in charge of the sound said to me, “Every episode is like a theatrical version” since the film was divided into three different themes: economy, politics, and religion. I think they were able to make a great job with the sound thanks to the three-structure and the 60 minutes format, despite the tight work schedule.
–About the recording session with Kaji Yuuki-san (voice of Shindo Arata) and Nakamura Yuuichi (voice of Kei Mikhail Ignatov), was there anything that impressed you?
Shiotani: I had to choose from over 50 people for the roles of Arata and Kei. As soon as we finished all the recordings, I was happy that I did the right choice about the cast. In the “PP” series, we don't let the actors know what they don't need to know (before recording). But this time, since the situation was pretty much complicated, I had to talk with Kaji-san about Arata's past. After the recording, I thought the two of them were the only able to play these characters. Kaji-san's performance of Arata gave me a deeper impression of the mysteriousness of the character, and when I saw the nuances of Nakamura-san's acting, I could feel the steadiness of Kei but at the same time his tendency to hide his true feelings. Everything was like I imagined it, it was perfect.
–How would you like fans to enjoy “PP3FI”?
Shiotani: I wanted to make “PP3FI” as a “live-action story in one place with a limited amount of time”. I wanted to show a lot of action, such as the fight between Arata, Kei and Azusawa Kouichi, who is able to commit crimes without getting his hands dirty, in the isolated, disconnected box of the “Raided Public Safety Bureau Building”, and the assault to the Public Safety Bureau building, where the security system is considered as the strongest and safest in the world. I also wanted to show how Arata's past was connected to Sibyl. The relationship between humans and machines is a common theme in the PP series, but also this time, I wanted to show how humans prevail over machines. Shizuka, a man with his own justice which is left untold, is depicted as well. I hope fans will enjoy this concluding chapter of “PP3”.
May 31 is Hidaka Noriko-san's birthday.
Hidaka Noriko-san started her career as a child actor, and began her idol and voice actress activities in the 1980s. She has played the roles of heroines and various characters. In 2020, she will be taking part in popular works such as "Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet", "The Genie Family 2020", and "Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!".
To celebrate her birthday, we at Anime!Anime! have conducted a survey asking, "Who is your favorite character voiced by Hidaka Noriko-san?" There were 232 votes during the voting period from May 19 through May 26.
There were more female respondents with the gender ratio being 25% male and 75% female. The age group was about 30% for those under the age of 19, about 25% for those in their 20s, and 20% in their 30s.
■Characters from popular series ranked high!
Taking 1st place was Tendou Akane from "Ranma ½" with roughly 25% of the votes. She moved up a position from last year.
She received votes such as, "Hidaka-san is the only one who can take on the role of Akane-chan, who has both a strong, lively side and a cute, girly side!", and "Akane-chan is the best Hidaka-character since she has both of Hidaka-san's amazing voices. The gracious feminine voice and the powerful shout."
Other comments pointed out the character's charm, "The scene where she cut her hair short left a strong impression on me. Though she can be a bit awkward and jealous, her bright smile and her true feelings that sometimes show are so cute. She is a relatable heroine," or Hidaka-san's dialogue with other characters, "Hidaka-san is the only one that could pull off those lovey-dovey fights with Yamaguchi Kappei-san as Ranma!"
This result reassures how popular this character is even if it has been 30 years since the anime.
Coming in 2nd is Sera Masumi from "Detective Conan" with 20% of the votes. She dropped a position from last year.
"Needless to say she is both cute and cool, I like her double tooth and how she refers to herself as Boku," and "She's usually boyish and cool, yet she can be so cute when it's about her big brother!", shows fans love her for her various charms. There were also many comments expressing their high expectations for the latest film, "The Scarlet Bullet" such as, "Her past and her family are gradually being unveiled, and it makes me love her even more. I'm excited to see 'The Scarlet Bullet' since it centers on the Akai family!"
3rd place went to the Dominator from "Psycho-Pass". With 15% of the votes, it moved up significantly from last year's unranked position.
The Dominator is a special gun that appears in the series. Many fans pointed out how her lifeless voice with emotions left a strong impression with comments like, "It's amazing how her voice can be so beautiful even if it's something difficult like a mechanical voice. The Dominator is a very important item in the series so it left a strong impression on me," and "Though it's an AI, it sounds as if it might have feelings, or not. The balance of the two sides was awesome."
"It surprised me to hear Hidaka-san's cold mechanical voice, which is completely different from her usual warm and gentle voice," shows that the gap between her other roles was also popular. The 3rd season released in Oct. 2019 was maybe the reason for its growing popularity.
■Here are some comments for other characters!
For Kikyou from "Inuyasha", "Her voice portrayed her feelings for Inuyasha and it was so empathetic," and "I had an image of Hidaka-san playing cheerful, energetic characters, so it amazed me how she could take on a role of such a cool character."
For Shalnark from "Hunter × Hunter" (2011 series), "Hidaka-san voicing Shalnark without changing her tone really matched the smart, cool personality of the character!"
For Seta Soujirou from "Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Swordsman Romantic Story", "She nailed both scenes where he is emotionless and where his suppressed emotions explode. I was knocked out by his elegant voice and aura."
There were also votes for a mother character, the Chairwoman, from "Love Live!", "It was impressive how she portrayed the two different sides of her: Kotori's mother and the school chairwoman."
Characters from a wide range of ages received votes. Well known characters such as Asakura Minami from "Touch" and Satsuki from "My Neighbor Totoro" also made it in the top 10.

Hanae Natsuki, voice actor of Kamado Tanjiro from “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba”, is part of the main cast of the movie “Gyoko no Nikuko-chan” which premiered on Jun. 11, 2021.
The movie is based on the original novel written by Nishi Kanako, and was awarded the 152nd Naoki prize holding a sales record of 350,000 copies. Akashiya Sanma was involved as a producer in the the anime movie.
The plot follows a journey of growth of Nikuko-chan and Kikuko, a mother and daughter living on a boat in a fishing harbor. The next day after the release was announced, voice actor Hanae Natsuki was also announced as being part the cast, quickly raising awareness to the movie.
Hanae voices Kikuko’s classmate, Ninomiya, a young boy who plays an important role in the development of the story.
We have interviewed Hanae via email and asked questions about the highlights of the movie and production anecdotes involving Akashiya Sanma.
■ What was some of the advice received from Akashiya Sanma? "He was there for the recording, but..."
—How did you feel when you were first proposed the role, given that Akashiya Sanma was involved as a producer?
Hanae: When I first got the proposal through my agency I was told that Sanma would be producing it. But I only decided to accept the role after taking a close look at the development papers from STUDIO4°C. I was quite impressed by the retrograde aesthetic of the visuals, such as the decaying fishing harbor town, which evoked a sense of nostalgia, and I also found myself being fond to the work as a whole.
—What was your first impression of Akashiya Sanma?
Hanae: I grew up watching him on the TV since I was a child, so the impression I have of him is of "being that guy on the screen". He always seems to be enjoying himself when he talks, and that puts me in a happy mood.
—The original novel by Nishi Kanko won the 152nd Naoki Prize selling more than 350,000 copies. What's your opinion about the novel after reading it alongside the screenplay script? What did you find interesting about it?
Hanae: The dialogues between Nikuko and Kikuko were very funny. And the plot twist is compelling as well. Despite being narrow in terms of themes touched upon, the world building itself felt huge.
Also I was looking forward to seeing what kind of way Nikuko was going to turn out on the big screen since her sense of presence in the original work is so powerful; and the movie ended up blowing my expectations. I think it turned out this great due to the visual quality of the animation and the superb performance by Otake (Nikuko’s voice).
—What kind of character is Ninomiya, the young boy you voiced?
Hanae: Ninomiya isn’t a character who gets much of the spotlight. However, he serves as a guiding light for Kikuko, reminding through his dialogues with her about what the important things really are.
—In regards to character building, what were some specific things you were careful about or what were some foundational points that served as a basis for your performance?
Hanae: Ninomiya is a mysterious kid. I was given some pointers from the director such as “to speak in a way that almost sounds like he is engaged in a conversation but at the same time isn’t”, and “saying all the things he wants to say one sidedly during the dialogues”; so I decided to focus on that. Because of that I feel that my character has the smallest voice among all the characters that appear in the movie…. (laugh).
Also, people normally don’t really pay any special attention to stuff like voice intonation or the way they speak when they're talking to others, let alone an elementary school kid like Ninomiya . So I tried to voice him in a natural manner as much as possible rather than focusing on more technical aspects of performing.
—Was there any particular directing orders from Akashiya Sanma in regards to voice acting?
Hanae: There was this time when I stuttered during the recordings. Sanma was present during that, and he told me to be careful about it (laughs).
—In Jan. 21, 2021 you appeared on his show “Sanma no Manma”. Do you have further appearances scheduled?
Hanae: Well I was very nervous during the show, but it was a lot of fun at the same time. I would love very much to make another appearance if another opportunity presents itself in the future!
—Anything you want to say to the audience who are about to see the movie?
Hanae: It’s a movie made for people of all ages. You can watch it with your family, friends, or lover. And I think it’s the type of movie that changes people. After finishing it you’ll feel a little bit different inside when thinking about the important people in your life. I hope that people will be invigorated after seeing the powerfulness of Nikuko on the theaters. Do look forward to it.

Sato Takeru played the main role in the live-action movie series "Rurouni Kenshin". The first movie in the series released in 2012 became a big hit, and in 2014 the sequel to the two-part series also became a hot topic.
And this time, the final chapter of the series "Rurouni Kenshin Saishuushou: The Final" was released on April 23 (Fri), and on June 4 (Fri) the series will be completed with "Rurouni Kenshin Saishuushou: The Beginning".
So, in March, Anime! Anime! held the shooting of the battle scene, which was supposed be the climax of "Rurouni Kenshin Saishuushou: The Final". We also conducted an interview at the same time. We will also report what director Otomo Keishi said at that time.
■ Action that feels the "spirit" of men crossing swords
"The Final" is a story about the battle between the main character, Himura Kenshin, and Yukishiro Enishi. Kenshin, who killed his beloved , Tomoe, and Tomoe's younger brother are crossing swords in revenge.
Their past strongly connected, they will fight a different death battle with Shishio Makoto, who became the main enemy from the previous work.
Otomo-san said, "For Enishi, his sister Tomoe was an irreplaceable person who was like a mother to him. Strong feelings not only for Tomoe but also for revenge at the swordsman who took her life have sprung up in Enishi. On the other hand, for Kenshin, Enishi is an opponent with who he does not want to fight but must fight. Because of these two people, the introduction of battle is also different from before. The tension is not like, "Now, it’s a fight!"
Perhaps because of that, the battle scene that I added this time seems to be quite powerful. The script was a little over 11 pages and 125 cuts, which was a dynamic and discerning shoot.
Arata Mackenyu played Enishi. Director Otomo commented, "He is a "full-blooded" action star, but at the same time, he excels in delicate plays that capture the subtleties of his heart. Enishi is not just a man obsessed with revenge, but a young man who originally had a kind heart. I thought that Arata Mackenyu, who has both high physical ability and naive acting abilities, would be a good match."
In addition, he seemed to bring the potential and presence to compete with Sato, saying, "If anyone will hit Sato Takeru, it would be him."
During the shooting, I have drawn in the powerful Kenshin performance by Sato. The swordsmen's muscles drawn with well-trained bodies are straight and heavy. There, I could feel the length of time that Enishi had lived for revenge.
Sato and others chat between the shoots, but they were brief moments. Suddenly, I saw a serious expression confirming the movement.
There were also moments when he gave off an air that no one could approach, and he was breathtaking at his crazy and sad aura.
The actions of Sato, who starred in the movie, have an impression of lightness. In the difficult action scenes like going around the pond in the atrium of the Western-style building by putting his feet on the sides of the stairs and the pillars, he practiced many times and got used to his body.
Also, in this scene, there is an important moment using wires. A wire extending from the center of the pond supported Sato, and a scene was shot that used centrifugal force to run through more dynamically.
Director Otomo commented that "Rurouni Kenshin" is "sticking to analog-like action shooting." By using wires and turning around to add to the physical strength of the actor without performing digital processing as much as possible, the scene became a sweaty scene with realistic images. Sato, who has shaped this kind of commitment in the past three works, may have a sensuous grasp of how to make a better picture. He didn't have any gaps in the angle of the sword he was holding, his toes, or his fingertips, and he was thrilled.
Otome also said, "Since it is a battle for a woman (Tomoe) who is not there, I think that it is good to show emotions in small movements and swings, not just offense and defense, so I asked Tanigaki (Kenji), the action director. Kenshin is surely confronting while accepting the attack of Enishi, "Isn't it different?","Can you understand, Enishi?". I want viewers to feel the atonement from actions"
"The movie is packed with the ideas that the action team has accumulated over the last five years and gained shooting art to support those ideas, and the wisdom and ingenuity of all the staff.," said Otomo-san. The best action movie in the history of Japanese movies has become a supreme movie this way. Please check at the theater to see what the culmination it is.
“Kotobuki Minako's Another Wonderland in the UK" is a series of interviews with voice actress Kotobuki Minako, who is currently living in the UK, to tell us in her own words what her daily life in the UK is like.
In the last issue, we asked her about how she spends her time in the UK now that the lockdown has eased in February and also about her announcement of extending her planned one-year stay in the UK until this fall.
In Episode 13, we look back at her life in the UK over the last month with photos taken by Kotobuki-san herself.
We also asked her about her Easter with her host family and relatives, what she wants to do now that the lockdown restrictions have been relaxed, and her thoughts on her YouTube channel "Kotobuki Minako's -Maji Kotobuki!-“ which will celebrate its first anniversary this April.
[Interview and text by Kaori Yoneda].
■Delighted to be reunited with schoolmates! Looking forward to the opening of cafes and the theater!
--In the UK, where the easing of the lockdown began in February; you must have had many days of free activity in March.
Kotobuki: I was allowed to meet up to six people outdoors, and I even got to see my Iraqi friends again for the first time in about six months!
--That sounds great! Is it still possible to eat at cafes and restaurants?
Kotobuki: It was difficult in March, but since April 12, we have finally been able to eat and drink outside (*The interview was conducted in mid-April.) Since clothing stores and beauty salons were also going to open this day, I was excited that “the day had finally arrived!”
I heard that there were many people who were even more excited than I was, and when the pubs opened at midnight on April 12, there were many people waiting in line. It was snowing in England that day, but everyone was really into it!
--Kotobuki-san, have you been to any restaurants yet?
Kotobuki: No, I haven't yet, because basically you can't eat or drink indoors yet. But before I came to England, I had a plan that I would try to go to a cafe every morning when I started my life in England. I'm looking forward to finally being able to put this into practice.
--You much be really looking forward to April and beyond!
Kotobuki: The first thing that makes me happy is that I can make plans with my friends. I used to say, "I want to go there! I can't go now, but..." So far, all I've done is make vague promises.
The theater is scheduled to open in May, so I've already secured tickets for four or five shows.
--On the work front, you appeared as the last voice acting guest on the Nippon Broadcasting System's radio program "Mu~Comi+Plus" in March.
Kotobuki: I was really happy that they invited Sphere as the last voice actor guest, and I was watching the last episode on March 25 on "Issho Ken Channel" (*a YouTube channel where the personality, announcer Yoshida Naoki, goes as a VTuber), and when Tanaka Rie and motsu-san came out as a surprise, I laughed out loud. I was entertained all the way to the end, but at the same time, I felt sad that the show was coming to an end.
--Let's take a look back at the memories of March with photos.
■To Kensington Park, that appeared in your first play, "Other People's Eyes.”
--Right away, that's a photo taken outdoors. Where was this taken?
Kotobuki: This is the Victoria & Albert Museum, which has a large collection of arts and crafts from all over the world. This is where Britain's jewels lie, and I've always wanted to go there someday, so I was happy to see the exterior for the first time. Unfortunately, I can't go inside yet.
--So, did you come to this area for some other purpose?
Kotobuki: It was near a massage parlor that I was introduced to. When I was in Japan, I used to go to a massage parlor once a week for constant maintenance, but since I hadn't done that at all for the past year, my body was starting to reach its limits.
It was a massage parlor run by a Japanese guy, and he was the best I've ever had! I felt so much better, so I decided to go for a walk and then go home.
The place in this photo is "Kensington Park". In my previous performance, "The Public Eye" (2017), I had said "Kensington Park" many times in my lines, so I was thrilled to say, "So this is that Kensington Park!”
■Overcoming my dislike of the “telephone“ in the UK
--Then there is your Easter photo, which was also shown on YouTube. In the video, you mentioned that you overcame raisins and rum after coming to the UK, but are there any other habits or behaviors that you were not good at that you have overcome?
Kotobuki: I feel like I'm getting over the "telephone," although it wasn't originally, since I came to England, I've felt uncomfortable with the telephone. I still can't speak English smoothly, so I have to use facial expressions and gestures to convey nuances, and I was really uncomfortable on the phone when I couldn't do that.
If it was face-to-face, I could just say "this one," but on the phone, I had to explain in detail, and I didn't have the confidence to convey that well. ...... The phone was the biggest hurdle for me, so I avoided it as much as possible, but I am getting over it now.
--Are there any specific episodes where you felt that you were able to overcome?
Kotobuki: It was when I made a phone call to a store that sells Kobe beef, which is rare in the UK. I was supposed to place an order for pickup on Friday, but I mistakenly placed it on Thursday. I called them and asked how to cancel the order, but they said, "Like this? Like this? I asked a lot of questions, but he was very polite and helpful.
I was able to cancel without any problems, and when I went to pick up my order on Friday, I was pleasantly surprised when she noticed me and said, "Minako? (laugh)
--It was definitely a delicious restaurant, even including the episode.
Kotobuki: It tasted really good too! You can see a little bit of rice in some parts, but that's because I couldn't resist and ate one piece before taking the picture (laughs).
→Next page: "I want to watch Japanese anime in Japanese": What is the appeal of Japanese anime and voice actors?
■”I want to watch Japanese anime in Japanese." What is the appeal of Japanese anime and voice actors?
--Did you spend Easter with your host family?
Kotobuki: I spent time with my host family and their relatives. It was a time when we couldn't meet other people indoors yet, so we had a bonfire in the garden and grilled sausages and did some activity-like things. My host family's grandchildren love anime, and they always do their best to talk about it, which made me feel lovely.
--Speaking of anime, it was announced that the release date for "Gundam Reconguista in G III the Movie: Legacy from Outer Space" has been set for July 22 (*Kotobuki-san will be playing the role of Noredo Nag). How is Gundam's popularity overseas?
Kotobuki: When the live-action film adaptation of the "Mobile Suit Gundam" series was announced the other day, I saw a lot of excitement on the Internet. That's how much "Gundam" is loved all over the world, and I felt that it is immortal.
--Hisashi: What kind of Japanese anime do the people you meet in England watch?
Kotobuki: Everyone I meet says that the first anime they watched was "DEATH NOTE". They talk about the psycho-horror elements and the interesting story line.
The other day, I was talking about Japanese anime with a friend and they said, "I want to watch Japanese anime properly in Japanese," which left an impression on me. When I asked them why they didn't watch the anime dubbed in English, they said, "The emotions that Japanese people produce are so realistic that I can't believe it's anime. They said, "When it is dubbed, it sounds like they are talking in a children's cartoon.”
Maybe that's what it sounds like because, in the UK, anime has an image of being educational. I think it's good that the characters are well-drawn and you can see how they live their lives.
--Didn't the dubbing story sound very gratifying to you, Kotobuki, as a voice actor?
Kotobuki: I was so happy! It's an honor to know that people can sense the emotions from my lines even though they don't know what the Japanese means. Language is important, but it made me realize that emotions are the most important thing.
■The first anniversary of "Kotobuki Minako's Maji Kotobuki!” A look back at my first year as a YouTuber
-- "Minako Kotobuki's -Maji Kotbuki!-“ will be celebrating its first anniversary in April. How do you feel looking back on your year as a YouTuber again?
Kotobuki: Thankfully, I was able to continue for one year. It's thanks to all of you who have been watching me.
In March, I uploaded more than 100 videos, “I want to preserve this scenery!”, “I want to share with my fans in Japan!” There are so many things in the UK that I want to share with my Japanese fans, so I'd like to post more videos in the future!
--Personally, I liked Kotobuki's "Study With Me" because it showed your real life in the UK.
Kotobuki: Really? Actually, that video was something I struggled with for about a month before I finally released it. Personally, I've watched a lot of Study With Me videos, and I like the ones with music, so I kept asking myself, "Is it really okay if it's silent? I had a lot of discussions with the staff. In the end, I was very happy to hear that many people said it was good.
In the comments, some people said they wanted a longer version, so we hope to release a longer version in the future.
--May is the first anniversary of "Sphere's 4 colors LABO," and each of the four members has their own unique style in their videos, so please tell us about your favorite videos.
Kotobuki: Since we're here, let me introduce my favorite video by the other three members. For (Toyosaki) Aki, it's her makeup video.
I knew she liked make-up and cosmetics, and I saw her always talking about them with a twinkle in her eye, so I really like her.
As for (Tomatsu) Haruka, the legendary "milk and natto chazuke" (laughs).
I had heard about it, but I had never seen it. When I saw the video for the first time, I thought, "Maybe I will become interested”.
(Takagai) Ayahi, the video talking about the contents of her bag.
She has often said that she wanted to introduce the contents of her bag, and I thought it was wonderful that she was able to do so. Ayahi always has a lot of luggage (laughs), so I thought it would be worth seeing.
--Each time, when you introduce yourselves, you make one comment that is very Sphere like.
Kotobuki: When I'm thinking about it, my adrenaline is pumping and I'm in the mood to say, "This is going to be good!” But when I look at the self-introductions again, I often think, "What the heck am I saying? (laughs).
--It's still fresh in my mind when Yuuki Aoi made her first appearance as a guest. Is there anything new you would like to try in the future?
Kotobuki: I'd like to have Aoi and others as guests again. What I want to do most now is to travel within the UK. When things ease up, I'd like to be able to bring you scenes of England other than London.
I'd also like to introduce afternoon tea stores, and since I didn't film the Harry Potter Studio Tour when I went there before, I'd really like to film it next time and show you what it's like inside. Please look forward to it!

The first movie "Case.1 Crime and Punishment", was released on Jan. 25. Then, on Feb. 15 was released "Case.2 First Guardian", and on Mar. 8 the third movie "Case.3 On the Other Side of Love and Hate" was released, and each movie focused on the story of different characters.
"Psycho-Pass" is an SF original anime broadcasted on Fuji TV's "Noitamina" slot, produced by Production I.G, and it involve many famous creators , including Motohiro Katsuyuki, known for "Bayside Shakedown", as main director and Urobuchi Gen, who is known for his dark stories such as "Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica", as a scenarist.
The TV anime series started in 2012, and many related works have been released since then, including manga, novels, and games.
In 2015, the completely new work "Psycho-Pass: The Movie" was released and became a big hit.
The long-awaited new trilogy features major characters such as Shimotsuki Mika x Ginoza Nobuchika (Case.1), Sugo Teppei x Masaoka Tomomi (Case.2), and Kogami Shinya (Case.3).
Currently, a preview video with the "keywords" from the three stories is released, and it is an exciting preview that unraveling the missing points of "Pycho-Pass" that has not been revealed so far.
This time, we will reveal more information about Ginoza and Shimotsuki, who are the main characters of "Case.1 Crime and Punishment" that was released on Jan. 25. Those who said, "I watched 'Pycho-Pass', but I forgot the story and characters," or "I didn't see the work in the first place, but I want to see now", please read this article .
■"Pycho-Pass"'s world concept
The story is set in Japan in 2112 AD, which is controlled by the "Sibyl System" that has the function of quantifying people's psychological state.
This qualification is called "Psycho-Pass", and everyone is living using it as an index in order to lead an "ideal life" free from harmful stress.
Among it, "crime coefficient" is a measured value related to crime, and even if a person who has not committed a crime will be judged as a "potential offender" if it exceeds the specified value.
To suppress crimes that happen even in such a surveillance society, inspectors (= enforcers) of the police organization "Public Security Bureau" under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Health and Welfare use a special pistol "dominator" that is organically connected to the Sibyl System and carry out security maintenance activities.
Moreover, even if the Crime Coefficient exceeds the specified value, a potential criminal (= executive officer), who is evaluated as having the ability to understand, predict, and resolve the crime, also joins in as an enforcer.
The first season, broadcast from Oct. 2012 to Mar. 2013, is dedicated to the member of the Public Security Bureau who suffered from Shougo Makishima, a thug but because he has a peculiar constitution called exemption constitution, in which the criminal coefficient corresponding to the criminal trend is not measured by Sibyl, his Crime Coefficient can not be measured.
Tsunemori Akane, a new inspector is struggling with the threat but decided to confront and eventually find a new way that did not require the Sibyl System.
The second season, which had been broadcast from Oct. to Dec. 2014, is set one and a half years after the end of the first season.
Ginoza, who became an executive officer after a series of incidents, and a new member of the Public Security Bureau with a new inspector Shimotsuki will fight against a person named Kasumi Kirito who can lower the crime coefficient by medication and psychological guidance.
Kasumi was a human from a multi-body transplant operation from 184 people who died in a plane crash, and the Sibyl System, which can only measure individual crime coefficients, could not find him.
Like Makishima in the first season, members of the Public Security Bureau will suffer because of the Sibyl System.
"Case 1.Crime and Punishment" will focus on Ginoza, who had helped Akane, the main protagonist in season 1 and 2, and also Shimozuka, who was troubled by Akane. It take place on winter 2117, when a runaway car crash into the Public Security building. The driver of that car is Yasaka Izumi, a counselor at a potential criminal isolation facility (sanctuary) in Aomori.
However, immediately before the interrogation, Yasaka was immediately sent home.
Shimotsuki goes to Aomori with Ginoza to repatriate Yasaka. They found what can be called a "false paradise"...
■Ginoza, who becomes popular by his appearances in the 2nd season, is also a reason for the success of the new work!
Ginoza, who is the main protagonist in "Case.1 Crime and Punishment," is a character that has been appearing in this work since the 1st season. At that time, he wore a suit and had slightly long bangs but a nervous expression and glasses, expressing the so-called "elite inspector" with his body.
However, at the end of the 1st season, when his Crime Coefficient exceeded the specified value, he becomes an executive officer, and his appearance greatly changed! First, he cut his hair, stopped wearing glasses, and even showed off his tank top, which he never showed in the first season.
There is no women who can't resist this drastic gap, "Hiding such a great body under the suit..."
Also, although he was only preaching to Akane, he stopped talking around, and on the contrary, he started talking with the newbie Shimotsuki.
Furthermore, it was even more surprising that in the movie released in 2015, his hair was stretched into a ponytail.
Since in the trailer, he appeared again with a ponytail, to find an answer to your expectations, "How Ginoza will change in new work?", you should check out his development on the cinema's big screen.
It's impossible to talk about Ginoza's past without tears...
Ginoza hates people with a high Crime Coefficient. Because of that and to keep his mental state clean, he believe that he inspectors and enforcers shouldn't interact deeply, so he didn't talk much with Kogami, his former partner and colleague inspector that he knew from high school, and also his father Masaoka as both of them become potential criminals.
After being betrayed and losing everything, he becomes a close person, and the psycho-pass of Ginoza gradually deteriorates after Kogami was not a potential criminal. He also attended counseling.
In addition, while searching for Makishima's whereabouts, he was caught in a trap and suffered from a serious injury, which destroyed his left arm. At that time, Masaoka protected Ginoza but gets fatally injured and eventually dies.
They had a parent-child conversation just before death, and Ginoza regretted that he pushed him away until now.
After that, his Crime Coefficient exceeded the specified value, and he became a potential offender, he chose to live as an executive officer. His left arm was replaced by an artificial limb, and he took off his fake glasses that he wore because he hated his eyes, which resemble him of his father, and his tense posture had become calm.
In the second season, as was said before, Ginoza impressed us with his muscular body. He has done many things since 1st season, such as sending advice to Akane and destroying the drone with his artificial hand.

■Cheeky and extra moves... Is Shimotsuki growing in the new work?
Shimotsuki, who appeared in the 2nd season, was defined as a proper person by the Sibyl System even though he was a minor, and became an inspector at an unusually young age, at 18. Since he sincerely believes in the Sibyl System and thinks that people with a high Crime Coefficient should be eliminated promptly, he is rebellious toward Akane who in her turn tries to confront it.
As a result, they often act in a way that interferes. Also, although he basically looks down on executive officers and potential criminals as an inspector, he seems to be longing for Kunizuka Yayoi. He also smelled like "Lilly".
Shimotsuki seems to be quite "cheeky" in the anime. Even in the promo video, he confidently said, "This time it's my case," so even in the new work, Shimotsuki's actions along with his personality are likely to interfere the story.
While awaiting Blu-ray and DVD for the latest series "PSYCHO-PASS 3 FIRST INSPECTOR" on Jul. 15, 2020, the interviews will be released 3 consecutive weeks.
Miyano Mamoru, who played Homura Shizuka, talked about his impression of playing a mysterious character and his opinion about the society controlled fully by "the Sibyl System" through the 3rd volume of the official interview.
<Full comments are listed below>
---Please tell us your impression about playing the character from the 3rd season "PSYCHO-PASS 3" (rephrased as "PP3") to "PSYCHO-PASS 3 FIRST INSPECTOR" (rephrased as "PP3FI").
Miyano Mamoru (rephrased as "Miyano"): I felt "PP3" became a hard-liner mystery because 60 minutes were given per episode. When I played Homura Shizuka, I asked the director (Shiotani Naoyoshi) about his impression of the character, like "why would he take such action?" or "what is his goal?". Every time I received an answer, I was always surprised by it.
There are many hidden features in "PP3", and I feel love for delicate designs. I wondered how many things does he want to do through the anime. I think the biggest appeals of this work are the abundant settings and neat structures.
---How did you understand Homura Shizuka?
Miyano: You cannot understand what is he thinking only by looking at his actions. Being mysterious is one of his appealing points.
But I thought that I cannot keep Homura as a mysterious character through my acting, therefore, I asked the director to update Homura's settings, and I always had Homura's believes and sense of justice in my mind. There are not many expressions of his belief and sense of justice in the anime, but I tried to voice him according his thoughts.
---So there was a movement in his feelings behind the scene.
Miyano: There is just one scene in "PP3FI" that Homura kindly talks to others, and how he talked was much different from how he usually behaves. It slightly shows his spirituality and belief toward his goals. It is the first moment when he showed his emotions openly to others. I am sure that scene makes him look mysterious.
---What did you think about the inspectors Shindou Arata and Kei Mikhail Ignatov, who oppose to the mysterious organization "Bifrost", where Homura belongs to?
Miyano: I believe that one of the appealing points of this series is the characteristics of two characters (Arata and Kei). I believe many of you had surprised from the appearances of a new type of partnership and new abilities, and there were changes to the flow of the story after the interactions between the characters were made. I like how the relationship between the two gradually changes and the story of each inspector gets depicted as well.
---In episode 8 of "PP3", Shizuka meets Kei and invites him as the 13th inspector. What impression did you get from Kei in episode 8?
Miyano: Kei is an honest man with a strong sense of justice and a clear weak point. (His wife, Maiko Maya Stronskaya) I think Kei was an easy man to handle for Shizuka. I think a tricky part of Shizuka became evident with it.
---At the same time, Shizuka confronts "Bifrost"'s congressman,
Shirogane Haruki and Saionji Eiko in "PP3" and "PP3FI". How did he understand the environment of "Bifrost"?
Miyano: I was stunned when I talked to the congressmen in "Bifrost". I did not want to lose to them (Shirogane and Saionji). I always rely on the actors playing them (Shirogane is played by Naka Hiroshi and Saionji is played by Tanaka Atsuko), since they are more experienced than I am, but I feel like confronting them as Shizuka. I exchanged words carefully while being nervous.
---The secret of "Bifrost" is revealed n "PP3FI". What's your thought on the society controlled by "Sibyl System"?
Miyano: I know, I know that "Sibyl System" is right...but is it acceptable? I think the interesting point of this series is that you always have "but" in your mind. A decrease in the number of criminals can be expected (by arresting the possible future criminals), and the safety can be intensified.
I think having your career chosen is an efficient way of living your life, but following the right and efficient paths may not be the only interesting way. I think I am allowed to work in multiple fields because I had experienced many things in my life.
I believe having many experiences is the method to foster your life with more choices. For example, when choosing a career, I like to look for things which suit me well.
That is why the theme of "'Sybl System' and humans" is interesting. You never get any mistake when you rely fully on the system and there is a possibility of believing in the wrong form of justice. That is why system needs humans, and it is depicted in "PP3FI" as well.
---How do you want the fans to enjoy "PP3FI"?
Miyano: I think many fans so far thought that Shizuka is a quiet character, and I think many people also believed that he is the last enemy. How he behaves in episode 8 toward Kei is clearly hiding something. (laugh)
But if you take a look at "PP3FI", you will quickly realize that Shizuka is one of the main characters. I am relieved to hear that by knowing the story plot for "PP3FI". Please enjoy the progression by watching the series.
(C) PSYCHO-PASS Production Committee
As the release of the Blu-ray & DVD of "Psycho-Pass 3: First Inspector", the latest title of the series, on Jul. 15, 2020 is getting close, a 3-week interview has been conducted.
This is the 2nd part in which Horiuchi Kenyuu as Azusawa Kouichi talks about what difficulty he felt in playing the lunatic character, his impression of the character, and his thoughts on his role.
<Full comments are as below>
Horiuchi Kenyuu as Azusawa Kouichi
――What was your impression on the TV series "Psycho-Pass 3" (hereinafter PP3)?
Horiuchi Kenyuu(hereinafter Horiuchi): I was told that the "Psycho-Pass" series was very popular, so it was a pleasure as an actor to be part of it.
――How did you interpret the role of Azusawa Kouichi, the First Inspector who does the dirty work for the mysterious <Bifrost>?
Horiuchi: I've been informed that he was a "villain", but when I saw the line "I'm happy" in the 1st episode and was told to "Portray him as an elusive character," it made me confused since there were so many patterns to play him in.
But after a few takes, I got a kind of "Not knowing if he is good or bad" feeling, and as the story developed I could grasp his past. The relationship between Azusawa and (Shindou) Arata's father (Shindou Atsushi) made me think he must have a scar in his heart. It was quite a challenge to figure out the elusive character little by little, but at the same time, was very interesting.
――Azusawa's character got revealed episode by episode. In episode 4 we found out that he was good at martial arts.
Horiuchi: He was so strong that the Audio Director told me not to use too much breath, haha. He even says "Ack-chooww!" Anyway, he was an interesting character. Oh, and he gives Enomiya Haruki a "choice" yet drives him to his death. He doesn't directly kill him, he lets him choose (death)... Azusawa is really crafty, haha.
――Azusawa, the First Inspector of <Bifrost> was one of the smartest criminals of the series.
Horiuchi: I've seen many villains in various series, but he may be the sharpest of them all. He dodges through the <Sibyl System> and kills people without staining his hue. How he gives his victims a "choice" was so scary, I would even call it lunacy.
But to him, this is just life. Everything that happens is within his expectations, so it doesn't mean much to him. In a way, he's a genius. Still, he has a hole in his heart, and his ambition comes from his desire to fill in that hole.
I felt that sorrow of his in Azusawa's lines when I played his role.
――Azusawa's partner, Obata (Chiyo)-chan, is a tough female that denounces him. But Azusawa doesn't mind, and even adores her. What do you think of their relationship?
Horiuchi: She was quite the partner. Exchanging lines with Obata-chan (Yahagi Sayuri) came naturally to me. I still wondered why Azusawa, as a superior as an Inspector, let Obata-chan be so harsh on him, haha.
But Azusawa has a lot of trust in Obata-chan. He never gets mad at her for making a mistake, and tells her it's okay. I once asked the director (Shiotani Naoyoshi) about their relationship, and he told me that Obata used to be an apparel designer, and she accidentally reached <Bifrost> when she was hacking in her spare time. Azusawa headhunted her to become an Inspector.
(Shindou) Arata and Kei (Mikhail Ignatov) are called climbing partners, but I believe Azusawa and Obata-chan have the same kind of relationship.
――So, they're the counterpart of Arata and Kei.
Horiuchi: In the scene where Azusawa tells Obata-chan about the story of "The Nutcracker (and the Mouse King)" (in episode 8), he is indirectly telling her about his plans. But since their conversation is so comical, the story sounds casual. I thought it was a beautiful scene.
――What did you think of the detectives of the Public Safety Bureau?
Horiuchi: I believe this is a series with many complex words. However, the actors play their roles so well that you can understand their lines, thanks to their skills. Personally speaking, I liked Todoroki (Tenma). He is a member of an elite family, yet he's a tough-looking Enforcer. It's amazing how carefully the past is depicted in the story.
The scene where Todoroki is delighted of getting a Dominator was so cute, haha. Also, when I saw the scene where Irie (Kazumichi) fiddles with the music box, I was like "Yeah, there are people like that." Oh, I just remembered, Irie used to be a delinquent too... It was fascinating to watch the detectives being themselves, but pulling up their socks when they need to.
――In "PP3FI", Azusawa takes over the Public Safety Bureau building. What was your impression on "PP3FI"?
Horiuchi: Even Obata-chan being taken in custody in the Public Safety Bureau building was within his expectations. I was purely impressed by his actions. There were also scenes where Obata-chan showed her skills, and seeing the relationship between the two was interesting.
――Azusawa finally confronts Shindou Atsushi's son, Shindou Arata.
Horiuchi: I would like everyone who watched the show to imagine what happened to Shindou Arata and Azusawa. Azusawa climbed the ladder from Enforcer to First Inspector, and wanted more. His expression when he talked about what his goals were was so intense.
It was terrifying, but at the same time, he seemed like he was in ecstasy. He had calculated way through so far, but just twice, he gets it wrong. The ending was quite sad. Obata-chan's last scene left a strong image on me.
――<Bifrost> gets unveiled in "PP3FI". How do you feel about a society controlled by the <Sibyl System>?
Horiuchi: There may really be a society controlled by an AI in the near future. But I think there will be people who try to take advantage of the system.
<Bifrost> does exactly that. They're playing a game by taking advantage of the <Sibyl System>, so probably the same thing will happen in the near future. However, I also thought that maybe the people of <Bifrost> were trying to create a better system than the <Sibyl System>.
――What are your thoughts on playing the role of Azusawa.
Horiuchi: It wasn't difficult to take on the role of Azusawa, but I can't say I could fully grasp what kind of person he was, he was quite complex. To be honest it was hard work. However, it was a great opportunity to take on such an interesting role.
What's amazing about this series is that you can enjoy it from various perspectives. Each of the main characters or even different from them. The story doesn't conclude that Azusawa is "evil". This gives the series the depth it has.
――How would you like the fans to enjoy "PP3FI"?
Horiuchi: Many elements from the former series appear in the show, so I believe all the "Psycho-Pass" fans can enjoy it.
However, we need more explanation from Azusawa. I was talking with Kaji (Yuuki)-kun (as Shindou Arata) the other day, and I said "Maybe Azusawa will come back as an Enforcer." He told me Azusawa has too strong of a character, haha.
I wish that someday, he will tell us more about himself.
