“Haikyu!! The Movie: Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump” has grossed 2.23 billion yen at the box office and drew more than 1.52 million viewers, starting off as the No. 1 blockbuster hit of 2024.

“Haikyu!!” is a remarkable sports manga by Furudate Haruichi, which began to be serialized in Shueisha’s “Weekly Shonen Jump” in February 2012 and has gained popularity for its passionate coming-of-age drama featuring high school students who are devoted to volleyball. It reached its conclusion after eight and a half years in July 2020 with a total of 45 volumes and exceeding 62 million issued copies. The TV anime began with the first season broadcast in 2014 and continued with the fourth season “Haikyu!! TO THE TOP” by December 2020.

As a sequel to the fourth season, “Haikyu!! The Movie” will be produced in two parts as the FINAL series. The first part of the film, “The Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump”, which depicts one of the most popular episodes in the original story, “Karasuno High School vs Nekoma High School”, was released on February 16.

From the initial decision to make the movie to its release, it has been constantly in the spotlight. The movie earned 2.23 billion yen in box-office revenue and drew 1.52 million viewers in the first three days, earning the highest weekend attendance. Furthermore, according to Kogyo Tsushinsha, it has become the No. 1 movie released in 2024 in terms of first-week box-office revenue, making it a great success.
It also received high scores on various movie review sites, including an astounding 4.5 on “Yahoo!” and 4.4 on “Filmarks”, reaching a very high level of satisfaction, especially from moviegoers.

There are already fans who watched it for the fifth time and left some comments about the great quality of IMAX such as, “IMAX is the best! It’s like watching a real game in person”, and “IMAX is great! I’m pretty sure I received some of the balls”. Even if you have already seen the movie once, from the second watching there will be new discoveries and experience even more great matches.
