More than 40 years have passed since the first movie was released in 1979, and the anime series “Mobile Suit Gundam” continues to be immensely popular even today. The latest movie, “Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathoway’s Flash” will be released on June 11, 2021.
This movie is based on a novel of the same title written by Tomino Yoshiyuki, the creator of the Gundam series, and is about 13 years after the events of Mobile Suit Gundam, and the fact that this novel, which was written over 30 years ago but is still loved today, is finally being made into a movie has sent shivers down the spines of all those who love the Gundam series.
I was so shocked by this information that I thought I was going to wake up with Newtype abilities.
“Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway’s Flash” has been released with high expectations from many Gundam fans. There is no doubt that it can be enjoyed on its own.
However, if you review the previous stories and learn more about Hathaway, you will surely enjoy it even more. Let’s review the story again, focusing on Hathaway’s progress so far. I’m sorry, but I need everyone’s lives! (Bright Noah style)
■Who is Noah Hathaway? A review of basic information
In order to learn more about Noah Hathaway, the main character of this story, we first need to know about his parents: his father’s name is Bright Noah, and his mother’s name is Yashima Mirai (her maiden name). They are the same people who fought alongside the main character, Amuro Ray, in the first Gundam series, Mobile Suit Gundam.
The main character Amuro Ray and other refugees who lost their homes in the war take refuge in the battleship White Base and are forced to survive the war together.
Hathaway’s father, Bright, was the captain of the White Base, and his mother, Mirai, was the helmswoman who supported him. After surviving the war together, the two formed a strong bond and married after the war ended. Their first son is Noah Hathaway.
In the subsequent Gundam series, Mirai does not go to war herself. However, Bright is a soldier. He continues to go to numerous battlefields and continues to command troops as the captain of a battleship.
As a result, Hathaway is forced to grow up with numerous wars and connections.
■When did Hathaway first appear in the Gundam series?
Hathaway first appeared in the Gundam series in “Mobile Suit Z Gundam” episode 17-18. The episode depicts Hathaway, who is only 7 years old, being taken by Mirai to get a ticket to go into space. Mirai’s former comrade in arms, Amuro Ray, happens to be there. Amuro and Mirai reminisce, and Mirai introduces her son, Hathaway, to Amuro.
This is the moment when the name Hathaway was engraved in the Gundam series.
It was not long after that that the evil hand reached out to them. Ben Wooder, a captain of the opposing force to Amuro, who had been monitoring the activities of Amuro and the others, decides that Mirai and the others are worthy of being hostages, and captures Mirai and Hathaway. He forces them to surrender in exchange for the release of hostages.
However, Amuro and the others, who have been through many deaths, do not give in to such threats. They create an opening by pretending to surrender, and successfully evade Ben Wooder and his men to rescue Mirai and Hathaway. Hathaway returns to his normal life.
At this time, Hathaway appeared as a guest character. It is a few years later that he becomes fully involved in the story. That moment will be depicted in the movie “Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack”.
■The tragedy that struck Hathaway in “Char’s Counterattack”.
Hathaway, who was 13 years old at the time, happens to be on board the battleship Ra Cailum commanded by his father, Bright, which is in the middle of a war. There he meets a girl named Quess Paraya and falls in love with her.
The war, however, cares nothing about his love, and cruelly tears his feelings apart.
Quess is attracted to Char Aznable, the commander of the forces opposing his father Bright, and leaves Ra Cailum.
After training as a pilot under Char, she boards the latest mobile armor, the Alpha-Azier, and goes to the front lines. There, Hathaway and Quess meet again, of course, as part of the opposing forces.
Hathaway tries to persuade Quess, but his voice does not move her. Hathaway refuses to give up, and Quess points her gun at him. Hathaway’s companion Chan Agi sees this and destroys the Alpha-Azier that Quess is riding, taking her life. Right in front of Hathaway’s eyes.
Hathaway loses a loved one right in front of his eyes. In a fit of rage, he takes the life of his ally Chan with his own hands.
Hathaway has suffered the death of his loved one and the life of his comrade. The tragedy of war is deeply etched in his mind.
■What kind of story will be depicted in “Hathaway’s Flash”?
Hathaway is heartbroken by the death of his loved one and his own actions that killed his allies. What does he think and what actions does he take out of this despair? ……
The whole story is depicted in “Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway’s Flash”. This work has not been made into a film until today, and Gundam fans had given up on it, thinking that the day would never come when they could see this work as an animation ……. After a long time, the day has finally come to see it on the screen.
Directed by Murase Shukoh, who has a deep connection with the Gundam series. The main character of this work, Hathaway, is played by Ono Kensho. I wonder what kind of images and acting he will bring to us in this film.
This film has been produced with high expectations. We don’t know when we will be able to see Hathaway in action on the screen. Please come and see it in the theater.
