On December 3 (LA local time), “ONE PIECE” and the American football team “LOS ANGELES RAMS” will hold a tie-up game “LOS ANGELES RAMS AND ONE PIECE GAME Collaboration DAY” as a one-day collaboration project. The Japanese character IP will be used in the U.S and will mark the first time that a Japanese character IP will appear in an official American football game.
“ONE PIECE” is a maritime adventure romance about the “Great Treasure (ONE PIECE)” by Oda Eiichiro, which began serialization in “Weekly Shonen Jump” issue 34 on July 22, 1997, and celebrated its 25th anniversary in July 2022. The story follows the adventures of the main character, Monkey D. Luffy, as he and his fellow members of the “Straw Hat Crew,” all of whom are bound by strong bonds, as they hone their own “abilities” and skills in their quest to become the Pirate King of the world’s oceans. The total number of comics sold worldwide exceeded 510 million copies as of August 2022.
The TV anime produced by Toei Animation has been on air since 1999, and a live-action version of the series has been distributed exclusively worldwide on Netflix since August 2023. Bandai’s “ONE PIECE Card Game” will celebrate its first anniversary in summer 2023, and has been extremely popular, with pop-up events and various competitions proving successful. In addition, “ONE PIECE Bounty Rush” distributed by Namco Bandai Entertainment Inc. surpassed 100 million downloads worldwide in August 2023, and the first official real tournament will be held. Proving that the popularity of this product is unstoppable as well
The “LOS ANGELES RAMS” is a team based in Los Angeles, California, that has a long history playing American football, the No. 1 sport in the United States. The tie-up game is scheduled to be played against the “CLEVELAND BROWNS” at SoFi Stadium, which has a capacity of over 70,000 people.
On the day of the game, characters from “One Piece” will appear one after another on LED ribbons installed around the seats in the stadium and on 3,500 TV monitors and digital signage. In addition, the symbolic 360° Infinity screen installed in the upper center of the stadium will display a special video presentation expressing the world of “ONE PIECE” between quarters.
In addition, approximately 60,000 “ONE PIECE” special edition sports towels, which are used as symbols by fans at sporting events, will be distributed free of charge. Separate to this, Bandai Namco Entertainment will also provide approximately 10,000 clear bags printed with illustrations of the “ONE PIECE Bounty Rush” and “ONE PIECE Card Game” app games, which were prepared by Bandai Namco Entertainment as a special bonus for visitors only on this day.
The official website of the LOS ANGELES RAMS will also be decorated with special “ONE PIECE” banners and logos through the day of the game, and the banners on the website will lead to “ONE PIECE LINKS,” a new English-only information site for overseas fans of the series.
This will be the first time that a Japanese character IP will appear at an official American local football game in the United States. It will also be the largest-ever collaboration event for “ONE PIECE” in the U.S. Following the October 2022 advertisement jacking in Times Square in New York City, “ONE PIECE” is expected to make its presence known in the U.S. and other parts of the world.
