“The Galaxy Express 999” will release a stylish watch inspired by the 999 to commemorate its 45th anniversary. “The Galaxy Express 999” is a masterpiece by Matsumoto Leiji that sparked a science fiction boom in Japan. The new watch, “Seiko Galaxy Express 999 45th Anniversary Commemorative Watch,” is now available at the PREMICO online store.
The story depicts Hoshino Tetsuro, a boy whose mother was killed by a mechanical man, and his journey to faraway Andromeda aboard the 999 with a mysterious beauty, Maetel, in order to obtain eternal life. It is an epic fantasy that emphasizes the preciousness of limited life through Tetsuro’s growth into an adult as he experiences various encounters and farewells on the planets he visits.
The series was serialized in “Shonen King” magazine from 1977, and an anime series was released the following year, followed by a movie version in 1979.
The black dial of the “Seiko Galaxy Express 999 45th Anniversary Commemorative Watch” is based on the image of the 999, with the symbolic headmark of the 999 at the 12 o’clock position, and three in-dials that resemble engine rooms.
The dial also features a shading in the center of the dial that expresses the roundness of a locomotive and rainbow-colored indexes that pay homage to the rainbow transmitted light system developed for the theatrical version of the movie.
Limited to 999 pieces, the watch is engraved with Mater’s portrait and the edition number from 1 to 999 on the back cover. The watch will be delivered in a special box with a foil-stamped logo commemorating the 45th anniversary.
Inside the box is an illustration of Maetel, which can be enjoyed as an interior decoration when the watch is stored away. Why don’t you let the time of eternity tick by with the “999”?
