The film ‘The First Slam Dunk’ has surpassed 10 billion yen in domestic box office revenue in the 67 days since its release on December 3, 2022. Furthermore, in South Korea, the film has been the No. 1 film in terms of attendance for 12 consecutive days, bringing the total number of viewers to over 2.43 million.
‘The First Slam Dunk’ is an anime film based on the boys’ manga “Slan Dunk,” which was serialized by Inoue Takehiko in “Weekly Shonen Jump” from issue 42 in 1990 to issue 27 in 1996. The original manga, which depicts the personal growth of high school basketball players, made a huge hit in Japan, with a total of over 120 million copies of the series in circulation.
The new film is directed and written by Inoue, the author of the original manga. The character design and animation direction are by Ehara Yasuyuki, who also worked on “Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress” and directed the animation for “Attack on Titan.” The voice cast includes Nakamura Shuugo as Miyagi Ryota, Kasama Jun as Mitsui Hisashi, Kamio Shinichiro as Ryukawa Kaede, Kimura Subaru as Sakuragi Hanamichi, and Miyake Kenta as Akagi Takenori.
On February 7, the 67th day after its release on December 3, 2022, the box-office revenue exceeded 10 billion yen and the number of viewers reached 6.87 million.
In South Korea, where the film has been in theaters since January 4, it ranked No. 1 at the box office for the first time on January 27. Since then, it has been No. 1 for 12 consecutive days, bringing the total number of viewers to over 2.43 million.
Fans are excited to see how far it will go with this momentum.
