“Suzume no Tojimari,” Shinkai Makoto’s latest work in three years, has sold more than 1.3 million tickets in just three days since its release on November 11, 2022.
Moreover, its box office topped 1.8 billion yen, which made the film get off to the hugest flying start among every work of the director.
“Suzume no Tojimari” is the latest film by director Shinkai, which was released for the first time in three years following “Your Name.” released in 2016 and “Weathering with You” released in 2019. Set in abandoned buildings around Japan, the film depicts the adventure of Suzume, a young girl who embarks on a journey to close the “doors” that lead to disasters, and her self-liberation and growth.
Within the first three days since its release on November 11, 2022, the film recorded an attendance of 1,331,081 with a box-office revenue of 1,884,215,620 yen.
This marks the highest three-day record among all Shinkai Makoto’s films, with the attendance being 138.7% and 114.9% and box office being 147.4% and 114.7% of those of “Your Name.” (released: 2016, box office: 25.03 billion yen) and “Weathering with You” (released: 2019, box office: 14.19 billion yen.)
Furthermore, the film received a high satisfaction rating of 94.5% in a survey, and its distribution in 199 countries worldwide has been announced. Fans worldwide look forward to its continued popularity and the expansion of its worldwide box office.
“Suzume no Tojimari” is currently in theaters nationwide.
