The original animated feature film “Kimi wa Kanata”, which is set in Ikebukuro (Tokyo), is scheduled to be released on Nov. 27, 2020.
In addition, a teaser visual and trailer featuring the streets of Ikebukuro along with the narration by Matsumoto Honoka have been revealed.
Set in the rapidly changing and frenetic streets of Ikebukuro, the story is a coming-of-age fantasy in which the past and future of two childhood friends intersect. Their relationship appears to be complicated since the protagonist Mio can't convey her true feelings to his friend.
This is the first career challenge for Sena Yoshinobu to be the director and screenwriter of a feature animated film. He had already gained a great success with his short animated work “Kushimitama Samurai” at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
The cast includes Matsumoto Honoka (known for her role as the main character's co-worker Sumiko in the NHK TV drama series “Hiyokko”) as the protagonist Mio, who lives her life in a casual manner, and Seto Toshiki (known for his role as Kamen Rider Brave in “Kamen Rider Ex-Aid”) as Mio's childhood friend Arata.
The trailer depicts the beginning of the story with Mio's precious daily life, which is shown through her going on the way to school, taking a short break on the roof, and spending time with her childhood friend Arata, suddenly being taken away due to a car accident.
What will happen to Mio and her untold feelings for Arata? Although the full story has not been revealed yet, the scene where Mio falls from the sky, which is contrary to the real-life streets of the city, gives us a glimpse of some mysterious development.
The film is narrated by Matsumoto Honoka, who plays Mio in the story. With her clear voice, she delicately talks to the audience about the true feelings that Mio can't express to Arata.
The teaser visual shows Mio and Arata standing in front of the east exit of Ikebukuro Station.
In the story, famous places of Ikebukuro such as Sunshine City Aquarium and Ikefukurou will also appear. As a district of Tokyo famous for its streets filled with art, cinema, and manga/anime settings, the old-fashioned buildings will be depicted as well. Don't miss it!
“Kimi wa Kanata” will be released at TOHO Cinemas Ikebukuro and others nationwide on Nov. 27, 2020.
