It has been announced that the filming of the live-action “Yowamushi Pedal” has been completed. Comments and photos of Nagase Ren (as Onoda Sakamichi) and Itou Kentarou (as Imaizumi Shunsuke) have also been received.
“Yowamushi Pedal” is originally a manga with the same title by Watanabe Wataru, which is currently serialized in Weekly Shonen Champion. The story depicts Onoda Sakamichi, an anime-loving high school student who commutes to Akihabara from his hometown in Chiba on his mamachari (lit. “mom’s bike”, Japan’s ubiquitous city bicycles). There, he decides to join the Bicycle Club for a particular reason, and with his new friends, he will overcome his limits through bicycle racing.
The film has already been adapted into an anime, stage play, and drama series, but this is the first live-action movie.
After the film shooting started in early February, it was interrupted due to the declaration of the state of emergency. However, the filming restarted carefully in June after the cancellation of the declaration, and now it has been completed.
On the last shooting day, the race showdown with Onoda Sakamichi played by Nagase Ren and Imaizumi Shunsuke played by Itou Kentarou was filmed. The scene of the two of them desperately climbing up the steep hill (which also appears in the original story) to the very edge under the blazing sun is a must-see.
Nagase commented; “Today's scene was just hard! But we all worked hard from practice all the way through, and now it has become a good memory!”, while Imaizumi said, “Today was the hardest day for me too! It took from the cold to the hot season, but I'm glad we could finish it without any injury!”. Finally, they both said, “Now that we can't experience what we took for granted in the past, I hope you will be able to see our efforts and enjoy the springtime of life”.
The live-action film “Yowamushi Pedal” is scheduled to be released in theaters nationwide on Aug. 14, 2020.
