May 13 is “World Cocktail Day”.
Its origin can be found in the publication of the definition of cocktail in an American weekly newspaper on the same day in 1806.
Cocktails, which come in a variety of types, are a popular beverage for many people. Also, many characters in anime match match well with the image of the drinking.
If you could have a chance to drink with an anime character, who would you like to drink with?
Here at Anime!Anime!, we conducted a reader survey asking, “Which anime character would you like to have a drink with?”. During the survey period between May 1 to May 8, a total of 155 responses were received.
There were more female respondents with the gender ratio being 25% male and 75% female. The age group was about 50% for those under the age of 19, and about 30% for those in their 20s, mainly focusing on youngsters.
■A gathering of characters who love to drink!
The 1st place goes to Nakahara Chuuya from “Bungo Stray Dogs” with an approval rating of about 7%.
Readers commented, “He seems to know the cheapest and most delicious places. I hope he will stop getting drunk as he did so far (laugh)”, and “He knows various brands of alcohol and seems to guide me into them”.
One reader mentioned an episode of the poet Nakahara Chuuya, who became a character's model, by saying, “The real Nakahara Chuuya came up with surreal linkages about the act of drinking alcohol, such as “doing a surprised face while looking at a mackerel floating in the sky”.
The 2nd place goes to Amuro Tooru from “Detective Conan” with a very small difference in terms of the number of votes received from the first place.
Amuro Tooru has multiple faces, including a private detective, a member of the Black Organization, and a Security Police officer. Since he used to be called with the codename Bourbon in the Black Organization, he has become a character based on the image of alcohol. Fans have commented, “'I'd rather have a drink with Bourbon from the Black Organization than Amuro Tooru!”, and “When you get in trouble, I feel like he can listen to you over a drink without getting bored”.
The 3rd place goes to Akai Shuuichi from “Detective Conan”. In the Black Organization, his codename is Rye. Many fans seem to want to spend time with him; “I'd like to watch him drink after ordering the usual “whiskey on the rocks”, and “I just want him to sit next to me and drink together in a quiet bar”.
■Here are some other comments!!
Nikaido Yamato from “IDOLiSH7”, “Speaking of a character who loves drinking, Yamato-san! I'd like to be recommended by him for a good drink”.
Matsuno Osomatsu from “Mr. Osomatsu”, “He looks very happy while drinking alcohol, so I think it will definitely be fun to drink with him”.
Momose Narumi from “Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku”, “I was impressed by seeing her drinking in a Izakaya (Japanese bar) on her way home from work. I'd like to have a drink with her while talking like two nerds”.
Non-human characters were also voted, such as Nyanko-sensei from “Natsume's Book of Friends”, “He always gives a reason about his drinking alcohol. He is also cute when he gets dead drunk”.
In this survey, multiple characters who love drinking were ranked in. Boozers stand out at the top, but there are also characters like Sakata Gintoki from “Gintama” who are often depicted as drinkers but don't seem to have a high tolerance for alcohol.
Some of the characters who are still underage are also ranked, and received the comment, “I'd like to drink with them once they become adults!”.
