From the sci-fi anime film “AKIRA”, a 4K remastered ULTRA HD Blu-ray & Blu-ray (2-disc set) will be released on July 23, 2021. Today, a commercial was released to commemorate one week until the release.
“AKIRA” is an animated feature film released in 1988, based on the comic of the same title by Otomo Katsuhiro, which was serialized in Kodansha’s “Young Magazine” from 1982 to 1990, and directed by Otomo himself.
The film has been screened in many countries around the world, including the U.S., Europe, and Asia, and still attracts many fans as one of Japan’s representative animation works.
The commercial of “AKIRA 4K REMASTER EDITION / ULTRA HD Blu-ray & Blu-ray” has been released on YouTube with only one week left until it goes on sale.
The story takes place 31 years after July 1988, when a new type of bomb was used in the Kanto area and World War III broke out.
In 2019, Neo Tokyo, a megalopolis built on Tokyo Bay, is preparing to host the Olympic Games the following year and is regaining its former prosperity. Kaneda, the leader of a group of healthy juvenile delinquents, rides his motorcycle through the devastated city, running amok and engaging in repeated battles.
One night, while running amok, his companion Tetsuo encounters a strange experimental boy and is knocked down and injured. In front of Kaneda and his stunned friends, they are taken away to a military laboratory. Kaneda attempts to infiltrate the laboratory to rescue Tetsuo. However, there he sees a crazy Tetsuo who has awakened to a new “power” through excessive human experimentation.
Meanwhile, in a special baby room in the research institute, a young experimental girl predicts the awakening of “Top Secret Akira”. Tetsuo begins to approach the “Akira” that lies deep underground in order to get closer to the mystery of his own power.
“AKIRA 4K REMASTER EDITION / ULTRA HD Blu-ray & Blu-ray is priced at 6,380 yen (including tax) and will be released on July 23, 2021.
