June 11 is the day of the umbrella.
It was set since the day is often the day the rainy season starts in Japan.
Rainy days tend to make us feel depressed, but there are many anime that have memorable rainy scenes. The rain may bring about a sudden turn of events, a chance to leave school with your crush under the same umbrella, or an intense battle in the rain.
We at Anime!Anime! conducted the same readers’ survey as last year asking, “Which Anime Has an Impressive Rainy Scene?” There were 281 votes during the survey period from May 30 to June 6.
The voters were mainly female with a male to female ratio of 20% male to 80% female, the age range was on the younger side with 50% under 20 and 25% in their 20s.
■Various anime from popular series to blockbuster films made the list!
1st Place
Topping the list was “Gintama” with roughly 16% of the votes.
Since it’s a long series, there are many rainy scenes in “Gintama”, but many referred to part B of Episode 111 “There’s Almost A 100% Chance You’ll Forget Your Umbrella And Hate Yourself For It”.
“It’s a touching episode in which you can see Kagura’s girlish side and the bond of the Yorozuya members,” and “The scene where Gin-san and Shinpachi get under Kagura’s umbrella warmed my heart,” are some of the comments for this episode that shows how close the three of them are.
Also, there were some votes for the scene where Gintoki and Jirochou fight in the “Kabukicho Four Devas Arc”. A popular series that had its finale in 2021, took the top spot.
2nd Place
Coming in 2nd was “The Garden of Words” with roughly 9% of the votes.
The film is a love story that depicts a man and a woman who only meet on rainy days. It received comments saying how it changed their perspective of rain, such as, “The story is set in Shinjuku Gyoen in the rainy season, and the various expressions of rain, sometimes gentle, sometimes harsh, are fascinating. I also love how the rain seems to reflect the emotions of the characters and the development of the story,” “The depiction of the Japanese garden, the scenery reflecting in the water, and how it ripples with the rain is overwhelming. I don’t think there is any other anime that depicts rain so realistically,” and “Thanks to this anime, I can feel good for myself even on depressing days in the rainy season.”
3rd Place
“Weathering With You” took 3rd place with roughly 8% of the votes.
Weather is an important motif in this film that depicts the story of the runaway boy Morishima Hodaka and the “Sunshine Girl” Amano Hina. It received comments like, “The scene where the rain stops is so beautiful!” and “I couldn’t take my eyes off the beautiful rain.” There was also a comment pointing out being moved by the protagonist’s choice, “The decision Hodaka made at the end touched my heart.”
Director Shinkai Makoto’s works took 2nd and 3rd place.
■Here are some comments for other titles!
For “Psycho-Pass”, “It was raining on the day of Tsunemori Akane’s assignment, and it gives you a sense of the world of ‘Psycho-Pass’ where there is almost no blue sky,” and “Because it’s always raining when a new inspector is assigned.”
For “My Neighbor Totoro”, “The scene where Totoro becomes fond of the sound of raindrops falling on his umbrella, and jumps to drop a whole bunch of raindrops is always fun to watch,” and “The scene where Satsuki and Totoro meet was beautiful.”
There were also many votes for works with “雨” (Ame, which means rain) in the Japanese title such as:
“After the Rain” (恋は雨上がりのように), “Akira saying ‘I love you’ to the manager in the rain without an umbrella left a strong impression on me,” and “The glossiness of the rainy season made me even more nervous and excited.”
“Wolf Children” (おおかみこどもの雨と雪), “I still remember the scene where Hana looks for her son Ame in the storm. I was moved when I saw Ame all grown up.”
In this survey, not only TV series but several films also made it on the list. The results reaffirm that rain has been beautifully depicted in various titles.
