“TYPE-MOON Exhibition: Fate/stay night -15 years of history-” is held at Sony Music Roppongi Museum, Tokyo from Dec. 20. Ahead of the release to the public, there was a preview of the exhibition for the press on Dec. 19.
Not only the production process of “Fate/stay night” but displays of other TYPE-MOON related works (“Tsukihime”, “The Garden of Sinners”, etc. ) were at this exhibition, making it a must-see for the fans.
We will give you some tips about the exhibition so you can further enjoy your visit!
A life-size Saber welcomes you
As you enter the exhibition, the first thing that comes into sight is a life-size figure of Saber (Artoria Pendragon).
With details as fine as in each hair, even the shadow of the figure has dignity.
Facing Saber is a mascot costume of the creator of “Fate/stay night”, Nasu Kinoko.
There's a surprise waiting for you if you keep watching it.
An opening movie from ufotable including new animations
Next to the room with logos of all TYPE-MOON works is a theater room.
An opening movie containing still photos of the game and animation from the “Fate” series is screened, inviting the guests to the world of “Fate”.
At the end of the movie, there is a new animation by ufotable, known for works such as the film “Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel”.
The beautiful images will put tears in your eyes.
Loose leaves from high school days take you back to 1991
After the theater room, you will enter a space with walls full of characters from all “Fate” series. They are displayed in reverse order of time starting from 2019 giving you the feeling of traveling back in time.
The original art by Takeuchi Takashi of the heroines of “Fate/stay night”; Saber, Tosaka Rin, and Matou Sakura, are also exhibited. You can closely see the soft yet strong touch of the handwriting.
The time travel ends in 1991, with loose leaves of Nasu Kinoko in his high school days.
These loose leaves are the very beginning of the “Fate” series. The epic prologue and tense battle scenes are depicted.
It's unbelievable that the sentences are already so “Nasu Kinoko ish”. Beside them are illustrations also by Takeuchi Takashi in his high school days.
The recreation of the birthplace of “Fate”
The exhibition also has a space with the recreation of Nasu Kinoko's workspace.
Bookshelves full of books used as references, a collection of expressions of all the characters, a desktop computer with scripts on the screen… Everything makes the atmosphere as if Nasu Kinoko himself were there. By the way, the OS is Windows98. Some of you may feel nostalgic from the screen.
There are even fan fictions of “The Garden of Sinners”, initial plots of each work, and so on. It will take forever to check out each item in the area.
Another space has drafts of manga and character references by Takeuchi Takashi.
Rough designs of “Tsukihime” and “Fate/Grand Order” are also displayed giving you a whole view of the 15 years of history.
The corner with goods inspired by TYPE-MOON members and photos of their desks is quite impressive. Follow the line extending from the goods and you will see the comments of the members.
15 years of merchandise
TYPE-MOON GALLERY is the area with all the goods from Comic Market, the 10th-anniversary TYPE-MOON Fes., etc.
Many of the goods on display are no longer available.
There is also a corner with telephone cards that were bonuses for buying TYPE-MOON related products.
They are now a rare item but was quite popular when “Fate/stay night” was released.
This corner will change its display items each term. The telephone cards are here only for the 1st term so be sure not to miss them.
The process of creating “Fate”
The latter half of the exhibition is an area where you can experience the creation of the “Fate” game.
Not only the walls but even the ceiling is filled with rough designs and storyboards.
There is a corner where the procedure of the creation of an illustration is explained, using the jacket of “Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works” Blu-ray Disc Box II as an example.
You can see the illustrations of each individual character before they're laid on top of each other. Compare the rough design and the final picture and you will see the differences in the expressions.
The corner focused on music has scores of tracks from works such as the PS2 edition of “Fate/stay night”. They also display a guitar with Saber designed on it.
Illustrations larger than from the artbooks
The area name TYPE-MOON ART GALLERY exhibits cover illustrations of works of TYPE-MOON.
A part of the serial illustration “A Journey through Britain”, drawn by Takeuchi Takashi for the art book “Return to AVALON”, is also displayed.
The illustrations are all in larger sizes than the artbook letting you carefully look at them. You must enjoy the journey with Saber.
Experiencing the Holy Grail War through projection mapping
A 13m (roughly 47 feet) huge diorama of Fuyuki city appears at the end of the exhibition.
The memorable scenes from “Fate/stay night”, and “Fate/hollow ataraxia” are recreated through projection mapping. The lights projected on the diorama will let you experience the Holy Grail War.
The area has a tiered platform that gives you a great view of the whole city. You can see where each event happened during the Holy Grail War.
Autographs of the staff of “Fate” and the author of “Kimetsu no Yaiba: Demon Slayer”
The final area has autographs of writers and voice actors related to works of TYPE-MOON, along with illustrations of Saber by the author of “Kimetsuno Yaiba: Demon Slayer” Gotouge Koyoharu, a big fan of TYPE-MOON.
Sabers Excalibur is also displayed in the back of the room with a projection of her hometown, Britain in the back.
It takes about an hour and a half to see the whole exhibition. There is much precious material so please take your time and enjoy your visit.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony with the cast
At the end of the preview, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held by Kawasumi Ayako (voice of Saber), Ueda Kana (voice of Tosaka Rin), and Shitaya Noriko (voice of Matou Sakura). An avatar of Nasu Kinoko also appeared to celebrate the opening of the exhibition.
The cast members were dressed as the characters they voiced, cutting the ribbon with thoughts of the 15 years they've spent along with “Fate”.
